What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist who does braces?
An orthodontist is a dentist who has taken 2-3 years of full time training beyond the general dental degree. Their practice is limited to orthodontic treatment only. An orthodontist treats hundreds of orthodontic patients a year, where as a dentist doing braces treats only a small number, along with other dental procedures for check ups, cleanings and fillings. Only orthodontists may be members of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO).
