A Guide to Retainers After Braces: Protecting Your Beautiful Smile
Why Are Retainers After Braces Very Important?
Your teeth have spent considerable time being guided into their new positions by your braces. However, teeth naturally want to shift back toward their original positions, a process called orthodontic relapse. Retainers after braces act as a crucial safeguard, holding your teeth in their corrected positions while the surrounding bone and tissue adapt to the changes.
Without proper retainer use, you could see your teeth gradually shift back, potentially undoing months or years of orthodontic treatment. This is why Dr. DeHaan emphasizes the importance of retainer compliance to all patients at DeHaan Orthodontics.
Types of Retainers Available
Fixed Retainers
Fixed retainers consist of a thin wire bonded to the back of your teeth, typically the lower front teeth. These permanent retainers work 24/7 to prevent shifting and are ideal for patients who might forget to wear removable options.
Removable Retainers
Removable retainers come in several varieties:
Hawley Retainers: Made with a metal wire and acrylic base, these traditional retainers are durable and adjustable.
Clear Plastic Retainers: Similar in appearance to clear aligners, these retainers are nearly invisible and comfortable to wear.
How Long Should You Wear Retainers After Braces?
Because teeth can continue to shift throughout life, we recommend that all patients wear their retainers indefinitely after completing orthodontic treatment.
- First Year After Braces: Wear your retainers as much as possible (full-time) during the first year after your braces are removed.
- After One Year: Retainers can typically be worn at night only. This helps maintain your results while allowing your wisdom teeth to develop without affecting your smile.
- Wisdom Teeth Monitoring: Dr. Andrew DeHaan will evaluate your wisdom teeth every 6–9 months, with X-rays taken approximately every 18 months to track their development.
- Long-Term Use: Once your wisdom teeth have been addressed, continue wearing your retainers at least one night per week for life. As you age, the muscles around your teeth naturally tighten, which can cause teeth to shift or crowd. Consistent retainer use helps protect your smile.
Caring for Your Retainers
Proper retainer care ensures they remain effective and hygienic:
- Clean retainers daily with lukewarm water and mild soap
- Avoid hot water, which can warp plastic retainers
- Store retainers in their protective case when not wearing them
- Bring retainers to all orthodontic appointments for inspection
- Replace retainers as recommended by your orthodontist
What Happens If You Don’t Wear Your Retainers?
Skipping retainer wear can lead to teeth shifting back toward their original positions. Some patients notice changes within days or weeks of not wearing their retainers after braces. If significant shifting occurs, you might need additional orthodontic treatment to re-straighten your teeth.
Signs You Need a New Retainer
Contact your orthodontist if your retainer:
- Feels tight or uncomfortable after regular wear
- Shows visible cracks or damage
- No longer fits properly
- Has a persistent odor despite proper cleaning
